Britney Auctions Wears For Charity

Tabloid queen Britney Spears is taking her clothes off for a good cause.

The pop star will appear on CBS’s sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” airing Monday night at 8:30 p.m. New York time. She’ll play a ditzy receptionist who has a crush on one of the show’s main characters, played by Josh Radnor.

Immediately following the broadcast, Britney Jean Spears, 26, will auction off six items of her clothing worn on the set, including a navy print Juicy Couture dress, as well as a yellow dress and a blue floral cardigan by boutique designer Nanette Lepore.

The auction, sponsored by the show’s producers CBS (nyse: CBS - news - people ) and News Corp. (nyse: NWS - news - people )’s 20 th Century Fox Television, will be held at www.seenon.com, a website specializing in “shopping-enabled entertainment,” providing consumers with easy access to purchase items seen on television shows and in movies. Spears will donate proceeds from the sale to the Natural Resources Defense Council, a nonprofit environmental action group.

“The general public has a fascination with celebrities and fashion,” said Michel Schneider, Executive Director of Clothes Off Our Back, an organization that hosts charity auctions for celebrity attire. The world’s interest is peaked by a high profile person such as Spears and “it’s good that they are turning her performance into a positive occurrence, regardless of her performance quality,” Schneider concedes.

The sale of Brit’s attire should bring in “at least a few thousand dollars,” Schneider estimates, if not more, over the week-long online auction. Bidding wars for celebrity-worn apparel have been known to bring in much higher price tags than the actual value of those items.

Clothes Off Our Back, founded by actors/philanthropists Jane Kaczmarek and Bradley Whitford, pulled in $50,000 for the auction of a vintage Dior (other-otc: CHDRF - news - people ) dress worn by actress Jennifer Aniston at the 2002 Emmy Awards, where she won the Best Actress award for her role in NBC’s “Friends.”

Showtime's "Californication" actor David Duchovny’s signed a simple black t-shirt, likely worth $40, he had worn on the show and it went for $990. It might not seem like a lot but “for a t-shirt to make that kind of return for charity is still really impressive,” Schneider said.

Most recently, the emerald-green dress designed and made for actress Keira Knightly in Focus Features’ 2007 film “Atonement” went for $35,000 in a charity auction online.

“People want to know what celebrities are wearing,” Schneider continues. “They want items that have been worn by those celebrities and are willing to give to good causes to get them. As long as the general public remains interested in celebrities and fashion, this trend is not going away.”
